The ISOE Committee was created in 1992 as a committee with the Joint Secretairiat of the IAEA and the OECD/NEA. Nuclear power generation does not involve the emission of CO2, SOx nor NOx. While it provides a power source that is most benign to the environment, only one problem: is radiation exposure. The ISOE Committee, which aims to devise a straightforward solution to this problem, may be considered as a cleaning committee for nuclear power plants. ISOE is an acronym for an “Information System on Occupational Exposure.” It provides valuable information on nuclear power plants around the world to be exchanged between countries, with the aim of reducing radiation exposure of those who work in these plants. It is the world’s largest database on nuclear power plants, containing data on radiation exposure for each power plant.
As of now, the system has 29 member countries, with data on a total of 480 nuclear power plants around the world. The ISOE Committee has liaison persons assigned to all power plants of the member countries, and obtains the latest data on these plants from these persons to prepare its reports. Another feature of the committee is that representatives of nuclear regulatory organizations and those of power companies of each country are included as its members. The ISOE Committee has four technical centers in the world-the Asian Technical Center, the European Technical Center, and the North American Technical Center, which coordinate related organizations in the respective regions, and the IAEA technical center which coordinates related organizations in regions including East European countries. I was appointed as the seventh chairman of the committee in November 2006 at the IAEA Headquarters. I would like to work to the best of my ability for the next two years to make nuclear power plants in the world cleaner, sharing model examples as our common assets, and to bring new life to the ISOE Committee. |
