Return to About JNES

Yoshihiro Nakagome
Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES), an incorporated administrative agency, was established on October 1, 2003, as an expert organization with a mission to ensure safety in the use of nuclear energy to work together with the regulatory authority, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

In particular, we conduct a wide range of activities such as inspection of nuclear power plants and nuclear fuel cycle related facilities, analysis and evaluation of safety matters, emergency preparedness, domestic and overseas investigations, testing and research to ensure safety, collection, compilation and provision of the related information, and nuclear security. In April 2012, JNES started the first year of the third medium-term objective period (five years).

In the wake of the unprecedented serious accident at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami on March 11 last year, JNES has been assisting the government agencies without restricting the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency in dealing with the accident. Although JNES reformed its organization in response to the Niigataken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake, JNES has also reorganized to handle this serious accident and to improve the structure of inspection operations, and to strengthen the function of offering proposals to the government.

As a professional organization with an important mission to ensure nuclear safety, JNES takes the accident and the problems of inspection activities seriously. Keeping in mind these experiences, we make every effort to enhance the quality of our operations by increasing our knowledge and skills while reviewing regulations from the viewpoint of the general public. I also believe that the vital role of JNES is to put forth specific proposals in order to further improve nuclear safety regulations. I will also strive to make the workplace attractive for our personnel.

I sincerely hope that all stakeholders will continue to extend their support to us.
