Nuclear Energy System Safety Division |
To ensure and enhance the safety of various areas of nuclear systems such as nuclear installations and fuels,
the Division conducts safety analysis and evaluation (safety evaluations), technical studies for cause and countermeasures of incidents and troubles, development of standards,
underlying research and testing in a comprehensive manner. |
| 1. Aging Management for Nuclear Power Plants |
To evaluate the integrity of vessels and piping, the Division conducts research and testing regarding flaw generation conditions and characteristics in flaw progression,
and compiles the insights as an evaluation method.
Also, the Division conducts accurate evaluation regarding the necessity of aging management for materials used in vessels and piping and enhances the aging measures,
as well as investigates and compiles the latest technical knowledge in order to share the information among industry, academia and the government. |
| 2. The Safety of Nuclear Fuel |
| Using spent nuclear fuels, the Division conducts research and testing of uranium fuel,
and uranium and plutonium fuel (mixed oxide fuel;MOX fuel) in order to investigate changes in the characteristics of uranium dioxide and changes in metal tubing (cladding tubes), generated during service at nuclear power plants. |
| 3. Human Factors and Instrumentation &
Control System |
The Division conducts development of standards,
safety evaluation, research activities pertaining to human factors including working processes and organizational management for nuclear systems as well as to highly developed digital I&C technology applying in nuclear power plants. |

Investigation and analysis of irradiated fuels in a post irradiation test facility

Reactor physics testing equipment for full MOX loading cores

Chemical effects testing equipment (PWR sump screen)

Analysis and evaluation activities using computers
| 4. Specific Phenomena to Nuclear Systems such as Nuclear Characteristics, Radiation Shielding in Nuclear Reactors |
The Division conducts analysis and evaluation of such safety related issues specific to nuclear systems as nuclear characteristics,
criticality, radiation shielding and exposure dose for reactors and other nuclear installations.
Also, the Division conducts research and testing to investigate reactor physics regarding MOX fuel loading cores.
| 5. Analysis and Evaluation of Thermal Hydraulics and Chemical Effects |
The Division conducts research and testing, analysis and evaluation of the behavior of reactor coolant when abnormal conditions occur at nuclear power plants.
Also, the Division conducts research and testing to establish fire prevention measures for nuclear installations.
| 6. Utilization of Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) |
The Division conducts quantitative analysis and evaluation on the risk,
which potentially exists in nuclear power plants and nuclear fuel cycle facilities,
applying the PSA method. The insights obtained such the analysis and evaluation, are used to enhance the scientific rationality and transparency of the nuclear safety regulations.
| 7. Severe Accident Measures |
The Division conducts analysis, evaluation,
research and testing to establish effective measures for preventing and mitigating any severe accident (an event that may result in fatal damage to a reactor core).
