Inspection, Review and Confirmation of Safety Management for Nuclear Installations
Important activities are conducted for inspection, review and confirmation of safety management, as part of the safety regulations based on the Electric Utilities Industry Law and the Law for the Regulation of Nuclear Source Material, Nuclear Fuel Material and Reactors. These activities can be generally divided into three categories; (1) activities conducted with the notification of the National Government, (2) activities conducted based on the application from a licensee, and (3) activities conducted in accordance with instructions from the National Government.
 1. Activities Conducted with the Notification of the National Government
- Pre-service Inspection
Important systems and equipments are checked for their conformity with technical standards during the construction stage of nuclear power plants*1. Pre-service inspection
  Pre-service inspection
- Fuel Assembly Inspection
Nuclear fuel material used for nuclear power plants such as the fuel are verified for their conformity to the technical standards.
- Periodic Inspection and Periodic Facility Inspection
During the operation period of nuclear power plants, the systems, equipments etc. especially important to safety are verified for their conformity to the technical standards.
- Check of Radioactivity Concentration
We verify the measurement and evaluation of radioactivity concentration conducted by electric utilities on the waste generated at Nuclear installations.
*1 Include reactors at the research and development stage.
 2. Activities Conducted Based on the Application from a Licensee
- Periodic Safety Management Review
The implementation system of the periodic inspection conducted by utilities at nuclear power plants is reviewed.
- Welding Safety Management Review
For welding of important systems, equipments etc. during the construction of nuclear power plants, the implementation system of inspection on welding operators, conducted by utilities are reviewed.
- Welding Inspection
During the construction of reactors and fuel material use facilities, etc. at the research and development stage, welding of important systems, equipments etc. are verified for their conformity to the technical standards.
- Confirmation on Consignments and Transportation Methods
Consignments and transportation methods for shipping nuclear fuel materials or other radioactive materials from nuclear power plants or other facilities*2 are verified for their conformity to the technical standards.
- Confirmation of Outside Disposal
Measures to dispose radioactive wastes and materials outside nuclear power plants or other facilities are verified for their conformity to the technical standards.
*2 Include nuclear power plants, refinement facilities, processing facilities, reprocessing facilities, spent-fuel storage facilities, waste burial facilities, waste management facilities, nuclear fuel material use facilities, etc.
