The Office of International Programs promotes and coordinates a wide scope of bilateral and multilateral international cooperation activities for enhancing and improving nuclear safety in Japan and in the world.

Nuclear Safety Information

The Office releases the domestic nuclear safety information and collects the overseas one by actively participating in the meetings of the international organizations including IAEA and OECD/NEA and the major nuclear countries.
The Office is also involved in the formulation of various international treaties regarding nuclear safety. In addition, the Office provides technical supports for the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, which performs international obligations including preparation and review of the reports for treaties.

The Office is placing representatives in Washington, D.C. in order to
- collect and analyze technical information on the safety of nuclear installations in the U.S.,
- facilitate cooperative research programs with the U.S. NRC or other institutes.

The Office has cooperative relationship with foreign Technical and Scientific Support Organizations (TSOs) for acquiring the latest findings and technology related to nuclear safety, by joint studies, information exchange, etc. The Office also participates in the meetings and technical committees of IAEA and OECD/NEA, positively promoting multilateral international cooperation.

The Office is an active player in the cooperation for establishing nuclear safety infrastructures and development of human resources in neighboring Asian countries, including providing training courses for the Chinese and Vietnamese nuclear safety regulators, and dispatching experts to hold nuclear safety seminars in China and Vietnam.

Asian Nuclear Safety Network (ANSN)

In the IAEA´s ANSN project, which aims at establishing nuclear safety infrastructures in the Asian region, the Office plays an important role in all aspects including the operation of the project, and activities for each issue, providing information and organizing workshops.

International Conventions

JNES provides technical support to NISA in preparing national reports and reviewing other countries' reports for the "Convention on Nuclear Safety" and the "Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management".
